An autopsy has been ordered for a 63-year-old man who died while surfing Saturday morning in waters off Lighthouse Road in Hawi.

An autopsy has been ordered for a 63-year-old man who died while surfing Saturday morning in waters off Lighthouse Road in Hawi.

The man, identified as John Willard of Waikoloa, hadn’t been in the water long when he caught a wave and disappeared, police said. Other surfers found Willard floating face down in the water and took him ashore.

Willard was prounounced dead at 11:23 a.m. at Kohala Hospital.

The case has been classified as a coroner’s inquest, police said.
